The Da Camera Society
The Da Camera Society is an organization in Los Angeles that presents chamber music in historic places. The 2018 Schindler Festival, a collaboration between the Da Camera Society of Los Angeles and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, was sponsored by the MaddocksBrown Foundation. The festival featured hand-picked musicians who performed at Los Angeles locations designed and built by renowned architect Rudolph M. Schindler. On Sunday, June 10th, WindSync performed in the outdoor courtyard of The Schindler House in West Hollywood. Audiences were treated to the wind chamber music of the prizewinning Houston-based quintet, while admiring architect Rudolph M. Schindler’s early-modernist masterpiece and one of Southern California’s most celebrated and iconic homes. On Sunday, June 17th Guitarist Mak Grgic performed solo guitar with a concert at the Van Dekker House in Woodland Hills. The expansiveness of his repertoire was displayed through a dizzying array of approaches and was an ideal pairing with the unique elements of the recently restored Van Dekker House. “Grgic’s playing combined excellent technique with an extensive range of emotional expression. He brought expansive warmth and delicate elegance to the Baroque pieces. Both works employ microtonal tunings and combine passages accented by sharp off-kilter attacks with passages of pianissimo harmonics. Both works seemed perfectly in tune with the brittle angularities of Schindler’s design and the gray, overcast sky through the large picture windows,” Jim Farber, San Francisco Classical Voice.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Series is slated for Spring 2019. Specially chosen musicians will perform at Los Angeles homes designed or influenced by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
