The Contemporary Austin

  • As a longtime supporter of artist Nathan Mabry, the MaddocksBrown Foundation made a gift to support the publication of the catalogue for The Sorcerer’s Burden: Contemporary Art and the Anthropological Turn, an exhibition at The Contemporary Austin that was on view from September 14, 2019 to January 19, 2020. Featuring works by artists from around the world including Ed Atkins, Nuotama Bodomo, Theo Eshetu, Cameron Jamie, Kapwani Kiwanga, Marie Lorenz, Nathan Mabry, Ruben Ochoa, Dario Robleto, Shimabuku, and Julia Wachtel, this group exhibition explored the intersection of art and anthropology tracing the longstanding human desire to collect, classify, and display across cultures and time. The exhibition’s programming included a talk between Mabry and anthropologist David Odo about the intersection of their fields as they relate to cultural appreciation and appropriation.
