Mak Center
- Unique in its role as a constellation of historical architectural sites and contemporary exhibition spaces, the develops local,
national, and international projects exploring the intersection of art and architecture. Its programming includes exhibitions,
lectures, symposia, discussions, performances, music series, publication projects, salons, architecture tours, and new work
comissions. The MaddocksBrown Foundation is a presenting sponser of DEMO – a group exhibition orginally scheduled for
summer, 2020. Exploring the lines between demolition, transformation, and extiniction, this project will engage four artists’
approaches to reckoning psychologically with the erasure of history that comes with the destruction of both iconic and
vernacular architecture. In Southern California, where buildings are regularly thrown away and “touchstones of identity” can
no longer be touched (in the words of architecture critic Robert Bevan), how can artists move past well-tread memorializing
tendencies to suggest new critical engagement?
