The Contemporary Austin
The Contemporary Austin comprises two locations: the historic Jones Center in downtown Austin, and Laguna Gloria, a unique, 14-acre art-in-nature site that includes the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park, the Gatehouse Gallery, and the Art School of Laguna Gloria. The MaddocksBrown Foundation has consistently supported exhibitions, catalogs and general activities of the museum. The MaddocksBrown Foundation recently made a grant to acquire the work of artist, Ai WeiWei. Wei’s Iron Tree Trunk, a 15-foot-high replica of a dead tree trunk, is cast from the found remains of a massive tree, departs from this assemblage tactic but retains its terrestrial mystique: an elegant, twisting monolith in the burnt orange characteristic of oxidized iron rusting over time, evoking both nature and industrialization.
